Concept

Rebuild means to create from new. This concept provides hope of a better future through reflection and the physical aspect of one rebuilding their life. Touches to nature and relaxation can be met throughout the space and utilization of calming colors such as greens, browns, and blues to open the space up for the opportunity to rebuild.

Research

Why Canada:
-Canada has the highest rates of PTSD of 24 countries studied
-9% will suff er from PTSD in their lifetime in Canada
-Almost 2/3 of Canadians have been exposed to a potentially traumatic event.-8% of adults in Canada meet the criteria for probable PTSD.

Why This Matters:
To create in-person treatment for first responders
-There are resources such as suicide hotlines like CIPSRT which focuses on mental health in public safety personnel, but they don’t provide hands-on help like our organization
-77% of Manitobans said that the state of health care in the province is poor
-25% of Canadians waited for four months or more for healthcare like surgeries, have waited at least 2 months for MRI scans, and about a month for CT scans.

Emotions First Responders May Experience:
-Amygdala is a part of the brain that triggers the fight or flight response. Fear can be easily triggered with those suffering with PTSD.
-Depression, anxiety, and PTSD are just a few of the emotions they might experience-Many may not be open to the idea of seeking help
-May feel secluded even when seeking help
-May feel as though no one else understands
-Flashbacks often
-Hard to focus on the positive
-Hard to think about relationships such as family and friends

What is PTSD?

(Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder):
-Disorder that develops in those who have experienced life-threatening events
-War, sexual assault, abuse, accidents, and natural disasters
-Prolonged stress response to event. Usually longer than a month
-Four Types of Symptoms
-Re-experiencing, Avoidance, Arousal and Reactivity, and Cognition and Mood
-Those who suffer from PTSD may be diagnosed with other mental health conditions
-Panic disorder, substance abuse, anxiety, and depressive disorders
-Psychotherapy or “talk therapy” refers to a variety of treatment techniques that process troubling symptoms and emotions

Why First Responders?

-A lot of first responders are haunted by memories of the people they have tried to save
-Will help prevent suicide, substance/alcohol abuse, and help first responders do their jobs
-In Canada, approximately 20%-45% of first responders suffer from PTSD or related conditions
